Chapter Fifteen
Sam, dressed and showered, wandered down to the kitchen, hoping a good breakfast would fill the emptiness that remained after last nightâs events. Much to her surprise, she wasnât the first in the kitchen this morning. Rita and an accessory-clad Gina stood side by side, making bacon and eggs. Jealously permeated through her body as she neared them, and it took all she had to keep a smile on her face as they both turned around to greet her.
âGood morning,â Sam called back, wondering how Jai was going to react to this new development.
âHow are you?â Gina replied, with a devilish grin, walking on the line of polite behavior.
âIâm doing well,â Sam answered sweetly.
As the smell of the hot food wandered through the house, footsteps began to come from all directions. First, Ruth thudded in, pecking her wife on the cheek before heading to the table. Then, Joe and Jai arrived almost simultaneously. The meal was a quiet one, mostly because of the tension caused by the unexpected guest, and Sam was disappointed that Jai seemed to still share body language with the ex that had caused her so much pain. They didnât even have to say anything to each other to know what the other needed, and this beautiful ability was marred by the fact that Jai had been so broken by Ginaâs actions.
Sam ate in silence, responding only once to Ruth who told her that her duties were in the barn, tending to the horses. Jai and Joe were sent out into the field, and Gina was left to her own resources. Sam broke from the table as soon as it was polite to do so, knowing that she couldnât sit another minute in Ginaâs presence.
Sam wandered to the barn, thankful for the time to think. Jai was growing on her, and the pain that she had saw in Jaiâs eyes when she first met her told her that Jai had been badly hurt. She could tell by Jaiâs actions that she was battling demons that were haunting her every day, and something told her that Gina was the cause of these problems. Ginaâs snideness was marked in her behavior. Everybody else may see her as a nice, helpful person, but Sam knew better than trusting a person on the surface.
Sam approached the barn and immediately began her work. Ruth and Rita had ten horses, and these magnificent animals helped with the grunt work on the farm. For the most part, they were all well-behaved, except for Whiskey, a young black stallion. He was the youngest of the bunch and seemed to act ornery until he felt like he was paid enough attention. Whiskey whinnied as she walked by him, obviously not too happy that he wasnât her main priority. âIâll get to you, boy,â Sam replied, stifling a giggle.
âHey,â a voice called from the entrance of the barn. âI came to help.â
Sam turned around, finding Gina standing in the doorway. She could feel her chest tightened and her face grow red.
